Humber Bay’s year round residents enjoy an active community life and civic involvement. A record number of residents (according to a 1998 Government of Ontario study) are involved in the city’s everyday operations from attending council meetings to Community Watch Programs and Parent Teacher Associations. Humber Bay is home to five elementary schools (kindergarten to grade eight), three high schools (grades nine to twelve) and Humber Bay Community College.
Humber Bay General Hospital services the region’s health concerns along with five walk-in clinics as an alternative to the busy emergency room, especially in the summer months. Humber General’s airlift program (which uses two helicopters to transport the critically ill to the hospital) is known province wide and has been proven to be indispensible in emergencies in more isolated areas.
A close knit community throughout the year, Humber Bay’s population expands nearly 1/3 in the busy summer months due to tourism and cottage dwellers attracted by low real estate prices and the active family atmosphere of the city.
Each weekend of the summer has a special event in Humber Bay including Carnival on the Pier, Lighthouse Days (July 1-5), Canada Day Celebrations, and the many festivals (crafts and music). See the tourism and recreation section for a schedule and more information.
Main Street is the place to be especially during the summer months when local restaurants and bars open their patios on balmy nights. In the daytime, stroll along the street and browse in the many boutiques, art galleries and craft shops.
The lake area itself offers abundant recreational activites from jet ski, parasail and boat rentals to simply swimming and soaking up the sun. For the more adventurous, scuba diving and water skiing is also available. History walks, hiking tours, and cycling round out some of the outdoor activites available in Humber Bay. However, most satisfying activity for some is a long sit in a lounge chair by the lake.
